I broke up with Star Trek for good, for real, for ever around halfway through the ST:Voyager... )

But it was the right decision. So when the movie came calling, I had to think seriously about whether to reconsider my cold-turkey, no-contact policy. Had enough time elapsed, I wondered, that it no longer had the power to hurt or disappoint me?

Yes. And I saw the movie, and loved it. Not enough to go back to the relationship we had before, but in a more fondly distant hey-kid-you-did-good kind of way. Not that it didn't have its problems, cut for tiny spoilerish rant ) but I can appreciate execution, and this was well executed.

In fact, my only real disappointment is that I find this iteration of Kirk to be as sexually unattractive as Shatner-Kirk. He's always been the least appealing of the captains, and I don't know why. Picard? Fuck yes, in a heartbeat. The DS9 guy? Absolutely, with or without the definite article. Hell, I'd even take post-haircut Janeway out for a few drinks and see where the night goes. But Kirk, for all his womanizing ways, continues to leave me cold.

Of course, it may just because everyone in the movie is under 30 and I'm attracted to grizzled 40-somethings. Whatever. Shut up. It'll go away soon. Here, have some Spock/Uhura + Kirk.

Anything else interesting? Well, I'm enjoying My First Dictionary.

Jonathan Ross got Ewan McGregor to say the word "cock" (at about 6:30), which I appreciated.

Also, thumbs up for slashy King's porn!

Yeah, that's all I got.
